Top 5 Canary Islands Courses

The Canary Islands, located near the southern coast of Morocco, make up what is known as the Spanish archipelago. These sun kissed isles are the perfect location for golf holidaymakers looking for all-year-round sun, with long warm summers, followed by short and moderately warm winters. The main Islands for golf are Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote, each having a sizable selection of good courses.

1. Sheraton Salobre (New Course) Gran Canaria. (Visited by Mike Kaas-Stock)

We chose the Salobre New Course as our favourite, not because it gave us an easy round, but by the fact that it has to be the most unique course on the Islands, and the most unforgiving should you stray. Built within the volcanic landscape surrounding the Sheraton Salobre Hotel, we strongly suggest that you play with an open mind and a good supply of golf balls. The 5th is a real test, a par-5 across a canyon gouged out of the earth by molten lava. Hit the rock and your ball will bounce off never to be seen again.

2. Anfi Tauro Gran Canaria (Visited by Mike Kaas-Stock)

This desert-style course opened in 2006 and a lot of thought has been put into creating something both aesthetically pleasing and challenging. Of particular interest is the 8th hole, a par 4 with the green cut into the mountain. With a cliff face on three sides, it’s pretty spectacular. The 13th also caught our attention, a par-3 built into the side of a cliff so it’s a tight shot to the green.

3. Golf Del Sur Tenerife (Visited by Clive Agran)

This was the first course to open on the south of the island and the only one to boast 27 holes. Every bunker here is filled with black volcanic sand. There are three nine-hole loops, the north, south and links. The north has the best views, the south is regarded as the most difficult and the links is the most popular as it runs close to the sea.

4. Meloneras  Gran Canaria  (Visited by Mike Kaas-Stock)

The most Southern of the eight golf courses to be found on the island, this is a vibrant course, and for us it’s the back nine that we find most appealing. With stunning sea views on almost all nine holes, this really is one to savour – particularly the 12th, a par-3 to a green on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, which makes a stunning backdrop.

5. Amarilla Golf Tenerife (Visited by Mark Alexander)

One of nine courses on Tenerife and certainly one of the more interesting layouts on the island. The current routing provides ocean views and a number of greens perched high above the sea. The 11th, 12th and 13th in particular make the most of their prominent position overlooking the marina, and perhaps most impressive of all, the Donald Steel design omits any repetition so that each golf hole offers something new.

Other golf courses are to be found on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, but Gran Canaria and Tenerife are where you will find courses geared up for holidaymakers.

Our Conclusion – Both offer wonderful golf, but if you want to be able to book when you want and not feel the heat of other golfs behind you, we suggest that you have a serious look at Gran Canaria.
