As the nights draw in, who doesn’t want to get away from it all? For guaranteed warmth, sunshine and great golf, it’s time to head south…

Anyone who has not taken a golf holiday to Morocco is missing out on somewhere quite special. This is a country that’s on a mission to take on the likes of Spain at their own game, and new golf clubs and resorts are springing up everywhere.     Here at Great Golf, we love to cover the regular locations such as Marrakech or Agadir, but are always keen to show our readers somewhere that they have possibly not come across before. Tamuda Bay, in the north of the country, is well worth the trip, especially when there is a five star Sofitel Hotel there as well.

STUNNING SCENERY. Located to the south-east of Tangier and facing out into the Mediterranean Sea, Tamuda Bay is just the perfect place to stay and relax. There are plenty of flights to Tangier from the UK, but for those intrepid travellers who maybe want to combine some time in Spain as well, you could take the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar.      You will find that you are not the first to discover this area. There has been a city here since the third century BC and various civilizations have settled here, the Berbers, Romans and Phoenicians to name but a few.    Tamuda Bay is one of the newest developments in the country, and its proximity to Tangier makes it easily accessible. With a combination of great beaches, stunning surroundings and that essential Moroccan style, visitors will find plenty to do and see. The coastline here is exceptional and the drive from Tangier, with the sea on your left and the stunning Rif Mountains to your right, is magical. Bear in mind that a flight to Tangier is under three hours, but you arrive in a different world.

MODERN AND CHIC. In May 2016 the Sofitel Tamuda Bay opened its doors. This five-star beach-front hotel has set a new standard in refinement and sophistication for the location. The architect for this project was Galal Mahmoud, who brought a mixture of traditional Moroccan and 1950s French Riviera glamour to the design. Having 82 rooms, the hotel is large enough to have all the facilities you would expect of a luxury establishment, while not being overly expansive.      Each room has a balcony with views out to the Mediterranean or gardens. For guests looking for an extra level of comfort, there is a choice of the royal suite, five junior suites, three So Spa suites, five signature villas and eight beach suites, with private terrace and Jacuzzi. As with all Sofitel Hotels, the aim is to offer excellence in a calming environment.

SO SPA. The hotel has a vast amount of space dedicated to its spa facilities. Decorated in warm colours, the spa has an authentic hammam, sauna, unique hydrotherapy, beauty and detox treatments, plus a lovely relaxation area. So if your neck and shoulders are aching after a long day on the course, you know where to go for a proper unwind.

HIDDEN GEM. Golfing in the perfect environment, with sun, sea and mountains in abundance – what could be better? The Cabo Negro Golf Course is well worth any golfer’s time. Aesthetically pleasing and as technically challenging as you want to make it, the front nine follows the scenic coastline with those magical views out to sea.     There are some tricky holes with bunkers coming into play just to keep you on your toes. The back nine has those spectacular views of the Rif mountains and also some testing but fair holes.     The location is great and you really do have the feeling of having the course almost to yourself. At present, this is a hidden gem, but it will not be long before the fairways fill up so make that trip soon.

OTHER THINGS TO DO. When you tire of golf, or if there are people in your party who do not play, then there are plenty of other things to do and see, such as water sports, scuba diving or trekking in the Rif Mountains. A trip into the magical city of Tangier is also a must, as is a visit to the UNESCO site of Tetouan.     All in all, this is the perfect destination if you’re looking to escape the dreary winter months of Britain. So start packing!
